Político, vicepresidente de EE.UU. (1857–61) y oficial del ejército confederado. Ejerció como abogado y luego perteneció a la Cámara de Representantes (1851–55). En 1856 fue elegido vicepresidente junto al presidente
James Buchanan. En 1860, cuando el Partido Demócrata se dividió por el asunto de la esclavitud, fue el candidato a la presidencia por el ala sureña del partido. Derrotado por
Abraham Lincoln, buscó la transacción, pero, luego del tiroteo sobre el fuerte Sumter, instó a la secesión de Kentucky. Fue general del ejército confederado y participó en las campañas de Vicksburg y valle del Shenandoah. En 1865 fue secretario de guerra del gobierno confederado. Terminada la guerra, huyó a Inglaterra, donde permaneció tres años antes de regresar a Kentucky y retomar su profesión de abogado.
